Fostering an Akita

Foster Homes Needed

WGLAR is always in need of good foster homes for some of our rescued Akita's.

Fostering a dog is like caring for your own dog. Fostering an Akita for WGLAR helps us by expanding our capabilities and allows us to ultimately save more dogs… dogs that might otherwise be euthanized. Fostering allows us to house the dog in a caring home with a loving family until a good, permanent home is found. If you are seeking to adopt an Akita, fostering also allows you the opportunity to find the 'right' dog for you… sort of a ‘try before you buy' arrangement.

When fostering, all we ask is that you treat the dog kindly and have patience. Each rescued Akita has a unique history that we try to obtain in order to help the fostering family understand some of the dog's behavior.

Fostered dogs may require some basic obedience training (e.g,. Sit, Down, Come). Some fostered Akita's will need to be housebroken and crate trained. All this training can be done in the foster home. If you are unsure of the training techniques, WGLAR can provide you with lots of information and guidance. WGLAR pays for all of the health care needs and will supply a crate, if needed. The foster family pays for food, toys, and doggy treats. There is no greater satisfaction or warmer feeling than watching a rescued dog blossom into a wonderful pet because YOU took the time and effort and gave forth your love and compassion to help save its life.

To ensure the foster relationship between dog, family, and WGLAR remains a good one, we remain in frequent contact with the fostering family. WGLAR Volunteers are available to assist in behavior modification if required. Most often, the most difficult part for a family fostering an Akita for WGLAR is letting the dog go to its new home when he or she is adopted. By letting one dog go, however, you have the opportunity to save another Akita that desperately needs your help!

Rescued dogs are very grateful to be in loving homes with friendly humans. They will repay your kindness with endless amusement and unconditional love. If you have the capability to assist us by fostering a rescued Akita, please, please consider it! If you choose to foster an Akita for WGLAR, your life will be enriched just as much as the dog's is.
