A lot of effort is put forth by WGLAR volunteers to rescue a dog. Unfortunately, we are unable to save every adoptable Akita, a fact that brings us heartache all too frequently. You can help by considering a well tempered Akita for adoption through WGLAR. Feel free to contact any of our volunteers if you need more information or are interested in adopting an Akita.

The dogs we receive typically come from shelters or from owners surrendering their pet. Each dog's temperament is carefully evaluated prior to accepting it as 'adoptable' through WGLAR. We generally do not place dogs over one year old to homes with children under twelve (12) years of age. Exceptions may occur but compelling evidence must exist to ensure the placement will be successful.

Besides the love, devotion, and companionship you will receive from your Akita, there are other benefits to adopting a 'mature' dog through WGLAR:

1). Your Akita will already be partially  trained.

2). Your Akita will be up to date on vaccinations and all health issues will be
addressed and shared with you, the new owner.

3). Your Akita will already be spayed or neutered.

4). You will have spent some time with your Akita and will be familiar with his/her temperament.

5). Unlike with puppies, you will know how big your Akita is... no need to wonder.

6). Rescued Akitas typically bond very quickly with new owners... they recognize a good, loving home and are happy to be there and eager to please their new owner(s).
